Much Ado about life with Jack & Abby.

Nesting crazies

Got an email the other day indicating I was 30 weeks along in the pregnancy which totally freaked me out. I knew it was close, but was living in denial. When you consider that the C-section is scheduled for the 21st of March, that puts us at under eight weeks to go and I have no idea how I am going to accomplish all of the things I think “need” to be done by that point. There’s that little thing called work which includes opening and closing a production in February plus getting everything in order to “leave” for two months, on top of all the stuff around the house that suddenly seems VERY urgent. God, I had it easy the last go around!

I’m sure I am making K CRAZY, but he is weathering it like a champ. He must have learned something the first time around and following the aforementioned meltdown (previously characterized as “minor” but you all know me better than that), we’ve hopped to it.

#1 Order the backyard prefab “office” so that we can turn the inside office into Abby’s room. CHECK

#2 Get fabric for nursery so that Gigi (K’s mom) can begin to make new bedding. CHECK (So excited about this!)

That’s a photo of the fabric for the bumper (flowers) and the bed skirt (brown). And here’s some other fabric I am going to use on the walls in some fabulous configuration.

It’s a much calmer vision than the one I had for Jack’s nursery. For Jack, I wanted stimulating and bold. Now the poor kid is stuck with orange sherbet colored walls. For Abby, I need something soothing. So, yes, I recognize it is all about me. But I do wonder, will it have any affect on their personalities? I’m hoping it may mean Abby will be a better sleeper. Wishful thinking? A girl can dream.

I’m also not convinced this will all come together before she arrives, but it feels good to have laid the groundwork so that things can now progress. So much has to be done in the interim. So, of course, being the anal compulsive meticulous planner that I am, I measured our bedroom and all it’s furnishings, made a sketch to scale with little cut out furniture and rearranged it until I was happy with a new layout including room for some kind of bassinet-like feature. Side note: what’s the deal with bassinets? Why are they so butt ugly frilly? OK, this part is slightly selfish. Have wanted to rearrange our bedroom for ages, but now it seems urgent (and justifiable?). It’s like nesting on steroids. Terrible, I know, but I can’t stop myself.

#3 Transfer Jack into a “big boy bed.” CHECK

big-boy-bed.JPG
Lined up along the wall, are all of his current favorite animals: the homemade “Pokey Little Puppy,” a “Sneetch,” “Blue,” “Monkey,” and “Bear” which is actually a stuffed reindeer but Jack remains unconvinced. There’s also an elephant that often makes the rotation, but these seem to be something we must have on hand for a proper “night night.” Who’s in charge? And yes, that is Elmo on the blanket. It makes him happy and it’s pretty damn cute when he wakes up and says hello to Elmo and the animals.

The bed is from Ikea and really pretty cool. That bar that seems to be going around the top is actually an alternate base. When Jack gets older we can flip the entire thing over and it is like a mini-bunk bed with space underneath for a “secret” play area (or extra mattress when a friend stays over-egads that’s hard to fathom at this point!).

I wanted to get him into a new bed well before the baby came as we are transferring a lot of his furniture into her room. He has been doing really well with it (knock on wood). I think he likes the independence. And as my lap decreases, we’ve found story time increasingly uncomfortable so I like that I can lie down with him in it for a pre-sleep book and snuggle.

#4 Buy new car. CHECK
Yep, we’ve bit the bullet and bought a second car. We know it will be absolutely necessary once Jack hits preschool (thoughtful post on that maddening process at a later date) which could be as early as May depending. The one car status has served us well, but lately we’ve hit more than a few scenarios in which life would be a lot easier if we had two on hand. The good news is that we lucked into a used Civic Hybrid…good news due to fuel economy as well as a smaller “city” car AND it has the HOV sticker making the days when I drive into the city much more time efficient.

Now I won’t continue with the hundred or so other things that are on must get done list…clearly I am writing this just to make myself feel good about all that we have accomplished. Plus some people really wanted pictures of that bed!

A moment of empathy

In the middle of dinner the other night I had a minor meltdown. What prompted the meltdown is really too embarrasing to admit and can only be explained by the fatigue and hormonal imbalance of pregnancy. At any rate, I suddenly began crying, surprising myself, Kieran, and Jack it seems. At first he covered his face like I was, then he quietly said, “Mama sad?” and reached over with ”Mama hug?”

Of course that made me cry even harder, but in a different way. I’d like to take credit for his sweetness, but I think we just lucked out.

Forgot to mention

The fabulous pre-Christmas visit by my mom, aka “Granna.”

It was a great visit on many levels, but mostly because Jack was fully aware of her as a special and trusted part of the pack–no need to get to know her all over again. They got along swimmingly and spent some quality bonding time together. Kieran and I even got a movie night out of it–a rare treat!

It’s been a long time gone…

Still here? Fascinating. I didn’t think there were that many of you to begin with. I assume there are even fewer now. I imagine even my loyal family members have given up.

In the hiatus, we’ve kept busy and this blog is not the only thing that fell by the wayside…ohh there’s that stack of non-urgent mail that probably includes some unpaid bills and my summons for jury duty that I totally forgot about, just to name a couple. I used to be SO on top of things. What happened?

It was an overly hectic couple of months starting with Jack’s second birthday

which slid into Thanksgiving at K’s mom where Jack enjoyed some quality time with his cousins, aunt, uncle, and “Gigi.”

This was, of course, followed by Christmas and all it’s revelries. We spent Christmas here at home for the first time EVER which was fantastic. As much as I love being around extended family, nixing the travel to and from makes for a much more relaxing holiday. I feel the need, however, to post the first ever”daddy Christmas construction shots:”

Forget the milk and cookies…K went straight for the beer.

Jack enjoyed Christmas. He was obsessed with snowmen, which is funny given there’s no snow or even the possibility of it here. He enjoyed the opening of the gifts and with each present exclaimed, “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy…a box!” We did allow for some actual gifts, of course. And the train obsession was fueled by his Aunt Sarah:

Yes, a few pieces immediately went by the wayside. Really it was all about that remote control operated Thomas. And who doesn’t love that hat?

Following a very low key New Year’s, Jack and I took a little jaunt down to LA to visit temporary resident, T2, for the weekend. Despite the torrential downpours, we managed to get out and see a bit of the “sights.”

Despite staying in Hollywood, I totally missed the big ol’ sign. Clearly my powers of observation are dwindling in my old age. This is my second visit to LA and I  found myself underwhelmed once again. I just don’t think it’s the city for me. No worries, I was there for the company and that was fabulous! It’s rare to have time to catch up with friends these days and Jack was a dream child. It couldn’t have been an easier trip.

When it rains here in the Bay Area, Tahoe gets dumped with snow so K headed up to Tahoe this past weekend for some  snowboarding. And speaking of old age, he hits the ripe old age of 35 on Friday.

Whew. All caught up. Work is busy. We open a show in February. If you are local, come see it. Oh, and my belly gets bigger and bigger. This little girl seems to want to compete with her big brother in size! All is well on that front. I’ve decided to schedule a c-section given the last go around with labor was such a bear. So look to welcome Abigail Elizabeth on March 21st–unless she decides to come earlier. Given I am planning to work up to the very last minute and we will likely not have the physical space to accomodate her before then, I imagine she will do just that. The number one parenting lesson that I repeatedly learn is that there are very few things in life that I actually have control over!
